Time to visit the opthalmologist
For Advent this year I am making a point to get up early, like the monks and spend the day with nothing but natural light. This means that I am practicing in the dark every morning. It is a great way to make my playing more keen. I am practicing while visualizing the page in my head, while I play.
I first began by imagining what it was like before we had electric lighting. Imagine a life where your only ilumination was a candle, oil lamp, or fireplace. Think of it, monks would rise every morning to pray matins. It may be the reason that they had beards, no light to shave in the morning.
I have also begun to wean myself from over indulging in video content online. I no longer practice while listening to YouTube. It has restored my focus. Most of video content is there to upset, distract, and preoccupy us with things that are not important.
I have reserved my video viewing to music tutorials, and topics that improve my life. I have noticed a trend toward, “I Hate” videos. Example: “Five musicians that I hate”.
Over the years I have stopped reading. My new goal is to return to reading. My reading skills have gone fallow. I have taken up reading, in earnest, again. A chapter of Scripture every day, a book on not for profit organizitions, and the book Heretics, by G. K. Chesterton. I have bookshelves of books that I haven’t read or have only read the forward.
I will be making an appointment with the opthalmologist.
